Compassion fatigue refers to the emotional and physical exhaustion that can affect professionals and caregivers over time.  It is the result of showing compassion for someone whose suffering is ongoing and may not end. There is desensitization to patients and their stories, and a rising rate of stress levels. Those suffering from compassion fatigue may develop symptoms of depression, stress, anxiety, and may experience difficulty sleeping.  Learn to identify compassion fatigue and positive self-care practices.
