Do We Really Need a Month About Sexual Assault Awareness?

If you ask that question, you haven’t read the statistics.  We have an epidemic on our hands.  Someone in the United States is assaulted every 98 seconds.  So that’s just about right now.  One out of five women in America has been a victim of rape.  Almost 80 percent of rape victims know their assailant but 55% will never be incarcerated?

We need more than a month.  We need to courageously teach from cradle to the college campus that assault to anyone and in any form is wrong.

We need to raise our voices in protest when someone says, “it’s just locker room talk. Boys will be boys”

We need to demand that colleges, athletics, businesses and other institutions be held accountable when they do not investigate reports of abuse.

We need to step up when we see sexual harassment or observe situations where consent hasn’t been given or cannot be given.

Each one of us has a duty to help the next generation foster attitudes that promote healthy relationships, equality and respect.
